Castor oil packs are experiencing a renaissance of sorts as people are rediscovering their health benefits. They have been used for pain relief (menstrual cramps, joint pain, and muscle soreness), detoxification by stimulating the liver and lymphatic system, improving digestion, and even constipation. Here’s how you can harness the power of castor oil packs with therapeutic essential oils.
Materials:
- Organic castor oil
- Reusable castor oil compress wrap
- Heating pad or hot water bottle
- High-quality essential oils
- Towel
Procedure:
- Warm the castor oil slightly (optional). You can do this by placing the bottle in warm water for a few minutes, but do not microwave.
- Add 5 to 10 drops of your chosen essential oils to the castor oil you will be applying to the reusable castor oil compress wrap. Always do a patch test on a small area of skin first.
- Add the warm castor oil and essential oil mixture to the cotton side of the reusable castor oil compress wrap. Ensure it is thoroughly saturated but not dripping.
- Position the soaked flannel on the desired area of your body.
- Cover with a towel to help hold the pack in place and retain heat.
- Place a heating pad or hot water bottle on top of the towel for added comfort and deeper penetration of the oil.
- Lie down and relax for 30-60 minutes.
- After removing the pack, gently wipe off any excess oil with a damp cloth. Store the reusable castor oil compress wrap in a sealed container.
Recommended oils:
- Menstrual pain—clary sage, lavender, marjoram, geranium, fennel
- Joint/muscle pain—fir, peppermint, rosemary, ginger, marjoram, copaiba, frankincense
- Improved digestion/bowel regularity—lemon, rosemary, peppermint, ginger, fennel, cardamom
- Detoxification—citrus oils, juniper berry, frankincense
Precautions:
Do not use castor oil packs if you have any skin allergies or sensitivities.
Avoid using the pack if you have any open wounds or skin infections in the area.
If you experience any discomfort or irritation, remove the pack immediately. Apply a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil and pat the area with a paper towel. Repeat this process until discomfort subsides.
It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before using castor oil packs, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are pregnant.
